Industrial painting: Understanding the basics

Industrial paint protects machinery and structures in industrial environments. Choosing the correct paint is critical to durability in industrial settings.

Industrial Painting - The basics

Surfaces in industrial settings are subject to constant wear and tear from abrasive surfaces and chemicals. Choosing the correct industrial paint or coating is crucial to durability and resistance to these agents. There are many different types of high-quality industrial paint. Each has a specific purpose to help meet the needs of your facility.

Industrial coatings are not only used for aesthetic purposes, but also for their functionality in protecting industrial facilities and equipment. Industrial painters apply these products to protect machinery, consumer goods, and structures in industrial settings.

The value of industrial paint

The main function of these paints is to protect machinery and supports. The paint provides a coating that is resistant to impact, chemicals, and the environment. This protects machinery from things like weather, corrosion, or by providing fireproofing or resistance to high heat.

After the paint is dry, it goes through a series of tests. Testing is done to ensure resistance to impact, scratches, and other abrasions. To increase a paint’s functionality, additives can be mixed in.

In addition, coatings can be used for beautification purposes. Used to create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance that can increase the value of machinery. Pigments can also be added to reduce energy consumption to keep facilities cool.

Types of Industrial Paint

Industrial paint can be defined based on a number of different properties. For the purpose of this article, we will classify them in terms of composition.

Nitrocellulose

One of the oldest industrial paints and varnishes, Nitrocellulose paints are easy-to-apply and fast-drying. They have a variety of features. These features include high solubility in organic solvents, high compatibility with resins, transparency, odorless, non-toxic, and fast-drying.

Synthetic

Synthetic, or alkyd paints are used as enamel coatings for environmental protection. They are a type of oil-based paint, made with fatty acids and triglycerides as their primary components. The paint uses oxygen to create a chemical reaction during the painting process. Although the paint takes longer to dry, the reaction offers a long-lasting finish.

Epoxy

One of the most widely used industrial paints for its functionality. Epoxy paint has a balanced performance that is great for a variety of different projects. It is corrosion, impact, and abrasion-resistant. In addition, epoxy dries quickly and can adhere to a variety of surfaces.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane paint consists of two components - a base and a catalyst. When mixed, they form a polymer, used to create a thick film. Polyurethane coatings are resistant to extreme temperatures, abrasion, and corrosion.

The two main types of these paints are acrylic paint and polyester paint. Acrylic paint is water-based and highly resistant to corrosion. Polyester paints are great for areas with high humidity and places that see weather extremes, such as in the marine or aviation sector.
